✨ From Nottingham's Robin Hood to My Own Story of Migration ✨
During my business trip to Nottingham, I managed to take some time out of my busy schedule to briefly visit the Robin Hood statue and the Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem, claimed to be the oldest pub in history. These iconic landmarks took me momentarily back to a legendary era, allowing me to feel the continuation of that spirit of chivalry.
I couldn't help but reflect on my reasons for leaving Hong Kong. It was a unique time, and my decision was made out of necessity. The dramatic changes in the political environment, combined with encountering an overbearing supervisor at work, turned what was once a supportive and cohesive atmosphere into one that felt increasingly oppressive. This led most of my colleagues to resign, forcing my family and me to make a difficult choice. We left our homeland and came to this unfamiliar land, hoping to find some space and freedom for ourselves. Much like Robin Hood of old, who was driven into the forest, standing up against authority, and seeking his own justice and way of life.
The statue in Nottingham city centre made me pause, thinking about the story of this legendary figure. Robin Hood's tale is like an ancient ballad—changing with time, yet never fading. His figure traverses the river of history, clashing repeatedly with the Sheriff of Nottingham. It was an era full of adventure and fearlessness, symbolising the courage to resist injustice. This same courage became the inner strength I sought as I faced the challenges of migration.
Since migrating to the UK, my life has been vastly different from my teaching days in Hong Kong. Back then, I was a primary school teacher, guiding children in learning Chinese and helping them acquire knowledge. Now, life in the UK requires me to learn anew, to adapt again. Just as Robin Hood was reluctantly driven into the forest, I too had to leave behind my familiar classroom and explore new possibilities in life.
Upon arriving in the UK, I witnessed the changing seasons. England's winter feels particularly long, but spring always comes, just as Robin Hood and his companions maintained hope even in the face of hardship. Here, I have learned to slow down, to listen to the birds singing, to watch the clouds shifting, and to try and find my own balance in this new environment—to move away from past turbulence and find inner peace.
Walking through Nottingham, I felt the traces of history embedded in this land. Each story seemed like a piece of a puzzle, coming together to form the yearning for justice and freedom. For me, although England is unfamiliar, it has become a haven, offering a sense of warmth and hope during this challenging journey of migration.
The story of Robin Hood is one of courage, resistance, and perseverance. My story is about seeking myself and adapting to a new life. On this land that has witnessed legends, I am slowly weaving my own story. It may not have the thrilling adventures of Robin Hood, but it carries its own warmth and simplicity.
During my journey in Nottingham, I re-examined my choices and the path I had taken. Those decisions of the past, though filled with helplessness and bitterness, also revealed new possibilities. Just like Robin Hood chose to enter the forest, I chose to take on the challenging path of migration. I believe that as long as we have faith in our hearts, no matter how great the difficulties we face, we will eventually find our own sanctuary—a place where we can breathe freely and live bravely.
"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9) I pray that the Heavenly Father continues to grant me faith and hope, inspiring me to move forward in my new life.
